Bandwidth Demand Forecast for SA and Neighbouring Countries

BMI-T’s bandwidth model is designed to assist in investment planning, by providing a quantification and forecast of the growth in demand for bandwidth at the access, long distance and international levels, both within South Africa, between sub-Saharan countries and their neighbours, and between countries and the various submarine cable landing stations.

SA Hosting, Cloud Computing & Managed Security Market

Cloud computing remains a top focus area in the IT industry. IT Companies have made major investments in Cloud computing and ICT convergence has also brought traditional telco players into the picture with their hopes pinned on benefitting from this high growth opportunity.

SA IT Services Market Forecast & Analysis

BMI-T’s bandwidth model is designed to assist in investment planning, by providing a quantification and forecast of the growth in demand for bandwidth at the access, long distance and international levels, both within South Africa, between sub-Saharan countries and their neighbours, and between countries and the various submarine cable landing stations.

This published report provides summary findings of the detailed bandwidth model, consisting of in-depth demand estimation and forecasting, and a brief analysis of supply side considerations.  It examines terrestrial links within South and sub-Saharan Africa in greater detail, with a particular focus on national long distance bandwidth requirements, and the competitive dynamics emerging on each of the major routes.

Quantitative analysis and forecasts

This study is updated annually, and provides an up-to-date overview of the telecoms market including five year forecasts. The study is based on a combination of primary and secondary research and analysis, including further analysis of BMI-T in-depth studies on various market segments, which in turn are based on primary research including end user surveys and interviews with operators, service providers, and other stakeholders. Forecasts are based on scenario building, marketing modelling and industry structure assessment.

Segmentation

Demand-side analysis

  • Bandwidth demand forecasts by customer group, access type and application, rolled up to obtain overall peak traffic forecasts (ten year horizon).
  • National long distance and international bandwidth growth forecasts for each country.
  • Segmentations by route, including inter-country routes within SSA, and routes from major traffic aggregation centres to submarine cable landing stations and beyond.

Supply-side analysis

  • An overview of competitive supply by number of players per route and corresponding impact on market share and pricing.

Key questions answered:

  • What are the current and likely future bandwidth requirements for each country and major route.
  • How is this calculated and forecasted, by service, application and customer group? What are the drivers of the massive growth expected, and what factors must be considered when forecasting, allowing for diverging scenarios?
  • Who are the leading players in respect of terrestrial cable development, and what is the competitive dynamic?
  • Will there be an over-supply and what will the impact be?
